This is an enodgenous peptide secreted by the pituitary gland and is one of the peptide products of the POMC gene. It stimulates secretion of glucocorticoid steroid hormones. ACTH is used as a drug with the INN corticotropin. ACTH is an important component of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis and is often produced in response to biological stress.
